The Green Team Helps You to Help Those in Need

The Hillsdale Green team is sponsoring a season-long collection of homegrown produce from backyard gardeners to benefit the local food pantries, including those in Hillsdale, Westwood and Park Ridge. If you have extra vegetables or fruits from your garden harvest, please consider donating them to our local food pantries to help your neighbors in need. Most food pantries do not offer fresh produce to clients.

The collections will be every Sunday from 11:30am to 1:30pm, at the Helping Hands Food Pantry, located in the United Methodist Church, at the corner of Hillsdale Avenue and Magnolia Avenue in Hillsdale. Food can be dropped off at the food pantry entrance on Magnolia Avenue.

The collection is part of Ample Harvest, a national campaign to connect backyard gardeners with surplus food with local food pantries. To learn more about the national program, visit  ampleharvest.org.  For specific questions about the Pascack Valley collection, please contact Hillsdale Green Team Ample Harvest coordinators Elizabeth Scholl at ejscholl@verizon.net or 201-803-8897, or Cheryl Mercer at chezee@hotmail.com or 201-666-1106.

A Fitness Challenge for Hillsdale Residents

If 100 residents (as an individual or family) and employees of Hillsdale commit to walk/bike/run the streets of Hillsdale and register at www.walkaroundtown.org where you can choose to donate to the American Cancer Society, Hillsdale can be awarded the designation of a “Healthy Town” by The Mayors Wellness Campaign (MWC) . The MWC is a foundation funded by grants that support mayors as champions of community health.  The MWC created the “Healthy Town” designation to recognize the communities in which mayors have done an extraordinary job of promoting active living and healthy lifestyles.

Here’s How It Works (It is this easy!)

  • Register at www.walkaroundtown.org  where you can choose to donate to the American Cancer Society.
  • Walk/Bike/Run alone or in a group all the streets of Hillsdale (or as many as you would like) during the summer and fall of 2011
  • Visit Green Team Hillsdale at www.mygreenhillsdale.org to share your results.

Pascack Pi-oneers Selling LED Lightbulbs

The Pascack Valley Regional High School District’s FIRST Robotics Team, the Pascack Pi-oneers, are selling environmentally friendly LED light bulbs for only $12, or 3 for $30. The  bulbs give off a warm light and are the equivalent of a 40 to 60 watt bulb. They can be used in almost any fixture. They contain no mercury or lead, use only 7 watts of energy, and cost only 84 cents a year on your electric bill! Similar bulbs can be bought for $20 from major retailers.

All profits will go to support the Pascack Pi-oneers for their next competitive season. The team competes in the FIRST Robotics Competition, each year building a robot in six weeks to play a game. The Pi-oneers have been an award-winning team for the past seven years.

They will be selling the light bulbs every Thursday this summer at the River Vale Farmer’s Market on Mark Lane from 12pm to 6pm.
